I felt that the fact that there were two authors really assisted with this as each of the two main protagonists had their own individual voice and personality. One thing which I really liked about this book was the wonderful character development. When an unforeseen disaster leaves them stranded on a rogue planet with nobody but each other for company, the only way to survive the less than ideal circumstances might just be to overcome their differences. The book is about Lilac LaRoux, top of the top in space social class and making her first independent journey across the universe on her father’s star ship, the Icarus, and Tarver Merendsen, a decorated soldier who has no business speaking to, or even making eye contact with, anyone of Lilac’s status. Although it was not the most unique text I’ve ever laid eyes upon, These Broken Stars was an irresistible love story and a wonderful escape for a while. I must admit, I’m not typically a sci-fi lover, but the action-packed plot and the vividness of this space-adventure universe intrigued me nevertheless. Although I began this book with some doubts, after trying (and failing) to read it previously, I was soon enamoured with the world of Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner’s creation, or should I say, the worlds.

I feel completely exposed and unsafe to anything smaller than a garbage barge or anything bigger than a Naval battleship! I also hoped that the coverage of “titanic” or “monstrous” ships would be covered, but again I was disappointed. I was truly hoping this book would also explain how to avoid “big” or even “moderately large” ships, but alas in 112 pages not a scrap of information on how to avoid the dangers of tugboats or coast guard vessels was mentioned. I realize that the title is “How to Avoid Huge Ships,” but I didn’t think that Captain Trimmer would be so narrow minded in his book. Identify big ships’ horns and much more!Īllsion Hawn was a bit more critical in her review: Sense a big ship’s presence before it senses meĥ. But now, after reading this book, I feel at ease and totally prepared if a ship strike should occur. I couldn’t work, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep, all because the thought of a big ship encounter was too horrifying. Who could have predicted that a how-to manual would create such a stir? The following are a few sample comments left by readers:īefore reading this book, my days and nights were spent in terror over the possibility of running into a big ship. With 1,097 reviews, Captain John Trimmer’s book on “ How to Avoid Huge Ships” could very well be the most highly-reviewed maritime industry book on Amazon. Even for someone like me who is super-smart and gifted in her studies and different from everyone else, in fact superior to the vast majority - even for me life is already all plotted out and so dismal you could cry: no one seems to have thought of the fact that if life is absurd, being a brilliant success has no greater value than being a failure. the goldfish bowl.īut one thing is sure - there's no way I'm going to end up in the goldfish bowl. That might deprive you of a few good moments in your childhood but it would save you a considerable amount of time as an adult - not to mention the fact that you'd be spared at least one traumatic experience, i. I wonder if it wouldn't be simpler just to teach children right from the start that life is absurd. People aim for the stars, and they end up like goldfish in a bowl. All our family acquaintances have followed the same path: their youth spent trying to make the most of their intelligence, squeezing their studies like a lemon to make sure they'd secure a spot among the elite, then the rest of their lives wondering with a flabbergasted look on their faces why all that hopefulness has led to such a vain existence. We are not sure whether it would be more interesting to look at a variety of languages, or at a variety of translations in one language for different purposes (commercial reading for people knowing only the language, or academic reading for those trying to understand the original text). To summarize: in what ways do these translations succeed at translating The Aeneid honestly and accurately, and in what ways do they fall short? This was also incongruous because Owen came from a family in the granite business. We thought it was a miracle: how little he weighed. I believe Irving is a brilliant author and no disrespect is. Owen was so tiny, we loved to pick him up in truth, we couldn't resist picking him up.
